Rhinoplasty – Augmentation Rhinoplasty – San Ramon
Where many types of rhinoplasty procedures intend to shrink or make the nose smaller, there are some patients who need to need to build up the nose where there may be missing tissue. Often with patients who have suffered physical trauma, disease, birth defects, repeat surgeries, nose structures like the septum, columella or the bridge have been damaged or disfigured. In these cases, rhinoplasty generally takes on the strategy of nasal augmentation.
Nowadays, there are quite a few types of augmentation implants available to patients. The first choice comes from cartilage grafts, or pieces of cartilage harvested from other parts of the body such as the hip, leg, ear or other parts of the nose where the supply of cartilage may be more abundant. Cartilage may even be taken from the ribs or a cadaver. Synthetic implants made from solid silicone or other materials such as a bone-like substance called hydroxyapatite are available as well.
